Give it a try for yourself by switching the "Personal level indicators" option to "Show indicators" under Settings. One item you may have to look out for is contacts with multiple email addresses. Click the Group name, and all the members will show individually in your To: field. To pick group members, select To > My Contacts > the group name. Gmail will add every member of the group. Compose your message and press the 'Send' button. Performing this step allows you to hide each address fully. Also called blind carbon copy, you can input every recipient's email address into this Gmail field, divided by commas. If I get a bunch of emails with no arrows at all, I know they are probably from mailing lists. In the To: text box, type the Google Contacts group name. In the To field, enter the name of the group.
